  • President George W. Bush signs the "American Veterans Disabled for Life Commemorative Coin Act" into law as Public Law 110-277. The act calls for up to 350,000 silver dollars, with $10 surcharge to establish an endowment to support the construction of the American Veterans' Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C.   • A tractor-trailer transporting 3.5 million 2008 Jefferson 5-cent coins crashes into the back of another truck on Interstate 95 near Mims, Florida, scattering the coins along the highway. [57.79]

  • H.R. 7152 "Mark Twain Commemorative Coin Act" is introduced in the House of Representatives, seeking authorization for gold $5 and silver dollar coins in 2010 to mark the 175th anniversary of the birth of Mark Twain, and the 125th anniversary of publication of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.   • A fire at the Denver Mint forces evacuation of the facility for two hours, after sparks from workers grinding the top of an annealing furnace create a small fire and smoke in the ductwork. There are no injuries, and no damage is done to any coinage or coinage equipment. [60.42]

  • H.R. 2872 "The Boy Scouts of America Centennial Commemorative Coin Act" passes votes in the House of Representatives and Senate. [60.5]

The program encompasses a new series of circulating and non-circulating coins depicting national sites of each state and territory, and the District of Columbia, five designs per year, beginning in 2010.
